Dirty Ice-Cream @Mamasons

On a boring lockdown afternoon, we ventured out of our flat in Kentish Town, in need for something sweet and different from the usual.

We had seen the Kentish Town Mamasons pop up many times on our way to Camden Town, but were always too busy with errands to stop and check their menu.

The bilog caught our attention at once – Mamasons’ signature milk bun with ice cream inside. Toasty on the outside and creamy on the inside. We tried two very intriguing flavours, the purple delicate and sweet ube and the chocolate malt milo. Ube definitely won our love and loyalty.

Ube is the Filipino name for PURPLE YAM and is cultivated in Southeast Asia and Pacific islands as a result of the Austronesian expansion.

In the Philippines, ube is practically like Europe’s vanilla ice cream.

We’ve been coming back to the Mamasons branch in Kentish Town several times after our happy discovery, taking friends and family with us.

We’ve tried bilogs with other flavours, like queso (cheese) and black buko (black coconut), and they are all worth the try.

Price for the bilog is £6.50, it might look small at first glance but it’s quite filling, though if you’re like us you could easily go for the second one.

The menu is not just bilog – though that’s our obsession – you can choose from iced latte, milkshake, halo halo, brownies (look for the purple ube brownies) and doughnuts. And they do home delivery as well, for those winter days where you fancy some dirty ice cream but are to afraid to venture out.
